I have tears in my eyes as I write these words. We have come to the final part of our Inscribe the Word series, The Attributes of God, and the feeling is bittersweet.
This moment is sweet because we have studied what will be 365 passages of Scripture, all focusing on God's character. This moment is bitter because we come to the end of our study, which brings a tear to my eye. We haven't, of course, come to the end of learning about our God. He is infinite, and there is still so much more He wants to show us. about Himself.
The Lord moved on my heart in June 2019 to study God's Attributes for the following year. Little did I know what 2020 would hold. Oh, Friend, how we have needed to cling to who He is during this tumultuous year. We have needed to see the glorious nature of God as we have faced these unprecedented times.
My Inscribe the Word time each day has been a shelter in the storm. The Word has been my anchor, and the knowledge of the Holy has kept me when I would have drowned. I know that many of you have felt the same.
So thank you, Dear Friends. Thank you for taking this journey with me in 2020. We aren't finished yet. There is more to learn, more to see, and more to savor of the Savior. I encourage you to keep studying, keep praying, keep seeking, and keep finding. We just brushed the surface of who God is in 2020, but I hope that this year has ignited a passion in your heart to seek Him and know Him further than you ever have before.
With that, Friends, we come to our final Attribute to study this year. There would be no better way to end, during this Christmas season, than studying . . .
THE LOVE of GOD.
This past year, we have studied fourteen of God’s attributes. From these, we can learn so much about His love. For this reason, I chose to inscribe The Love of God for our final part of the study.
We can know, for instance, that:
Because God is self-existent, His love had no beginning.
Because God is eternal, His love can have no end.
Because He is infinite, His love has no limit.
Because He is holy, His love is the quintessence of all spotless purity.
Because He is immense, His love is an incomprehensibly vast, bottomless, shoreless sea.
Because He is faithful, His love never fails.
Because He is full of grace and mercy, His love flows from grace and mercy.
Because He is omnipotent, His love is powerful.
Because He is omnipresent, His love will never leave us.
Because He is patient, so is His love.
Because He is immutable, His love will never change.
Because He is good, love wills the good of all. - Adapted from A. W. Tozer Knowledge of the Holy.
With this in mind, we open to thirty-one glorious passages of Scripture proclaiming that
God is Love and Love is of God!
Friends, as we close this series, I go back to the words penned on day one:
A.W. Tozer said in his book The Knowledge of the Holy, "The low view of God entertained almost universally among Christians is the cause of a hundred lesser evils everywhere among us . . .The decline of the knowledge of The Holy has brought on our troubles. A rediscovery of the majesty of God will go a long way in curing them."
Our 2020 Attributes of God series' focus will be to get back the majesty of The Holy.
The focus will be on getting back our spirit of worship.
The focus will be on getting away from the noise to meet with God in stillness and quiet.
The focus will be on understanding the Majesty of Heaven and the Composer of this masterpiece called LIFE.
The focus will be on HIM.And in turn, as Tozer so brilliantly composed, may this knowledge of The Holy go a long way in curing the troubles we have.
My prayer as we finish this series is that you have gained an intimate knowledge of the Holy and that the troubles you've faced this year were cured in the light of the knowledge of who He is. Not just head-knowledge. But that your heart has been changed and transformed as you have gazed into His glorious face.
In 2021, our series will be The Promises of God. I pray that as we turn the page on this chapter, we take our knowledge of the Holy, and we see every promise in light of God's Attributes.
I don't know what 2021 holds. If I am honest, I don't think we will be going "back to normal," whatever that is. But I do know one thing: do not stop looking to Jesus.
"Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace."
