Inscribe the Word . . . Beauty.

In 2015, I started a New Year practice called ONE WORD. Instead of choosing resolutions, I chose one word to define and focus on in the New Year. Over the years, this simple yet profound practice has helped me grow spiritually, sharpen my focus, and live with greater intention. You can read more about my journey here and get started on choosing your word for the New Year!

This year, my word for the year is BEAUTY, and as I reflect on this theme, I find myself drawn to the depth and richness of its meaning in Scripture. Beauty surrounds us—in God’s creation, in His glory, in humanity, and in His Word. For this month’s Inscribe the Word plan, we’ll explore these facets of beauty together.

Below, I’ve divided the theme into four sections, each reflecting a unique aspect of beauty in the Bible. My prayer is that as you meditate on these verses and write them out, you’ll see the beauty of the Lord in new and transformative ways.

1. Beauty in Creation

God’s handiwork is breathtaking. From the heavens' grandeur to the smallest flower's intricate details, creation speaks of His creativity, power, and love. These scriptures remind us to pause, marvel, and see the beauty of God in the world around us:

  • Psalm 33:4-9 – God’s Word shaped the heavens and earth, declaring His beauty in every sunrise and wave.

  • Job 38:4-7 – God’s creative power and wisdom remind us of His intricate design, even in the foundations of the earth.

  • Isaiah 40:28-31 – The everlasting God who renews our strength is also the Creator of infinite beauty.

  • Psalm 65:9-13 – God’s provision transforms the earth, clothing valleys with beauty, and filling them with songs of joy.

This month, let’s intentionally pause to reflect on how the beauty of creation draws us closer to the Creator. By noticing the intricate details of nature, we can deepen our sense of awe and worship. Take a brisk walk in the crisp morning air or beneath the evening sky. Watch the winter sun paint the horizon as it rises and sets. Look up and marvel at the stars scattered across the heavens. These fleeting moments of stillness and wonder can transform our perspective and remind us of God’s artistry all around us.

2. Beauty in God’s Glory

God’s glory is the ultimate beauty. In Scripture, His splendor is described as radiant, majestic, and awe-inspiring. These verses invite us to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and worship Him for who He is:

  • Psalm 27:4-6 – One thing we seek: to dwell in the Lord’s presence and gaze on His beauty.

  • Isaiah 33:15-17 – The beauty of righteousness leads us to behold the King in His beauty.

  • 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 – In Christ, we are transformed into His glorious image, reflecting His beauty.

  • Revelation 21:10-12 – The New Jerusalem shines with the beauty of God’s glory, a reminder of His eternal splendor.

These passages encourage us to fix our eyes on the beauty of God’s holiness and glory. How might this kind of beauty reshape our worship and perspective?

3. Beauty in Humanity

We are created in God’s image, fearfully and wonderfully made. True beauty isn’t just about appearances—it’s found in the heart and in how we reflect God’s character. These scriptures reveal the dignity and beauty of humanity:

  • Psalm 139:13-16 – God knit us together in the womb, and we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  • 1 Peter 3:3-6 – True beauty comes from the inner self, a gentle and quiet spirit that honors God.

  • Matthew 6:28-30 – If God clothes the lilies of the field in beauty, how much more does He care for us?

  • 1 Samuel 16:7 – While people focus on outward appearances, God looks at the heart, where true beauty resides.

As you write these verses, reflect on how God sees you and others through the lens of His perfect love and artistry.

4. Beauty in the Word and the Good News

God’s Word is a treasure trove of beauty. Through it, we encounter His truth, promises, and the Gospel—the ultimate good news that transforms lives. These passages invite us to see the beauty of His Word and the message of salvation:

  • Isaiah 55:10-13 – God’s Word accomplishes His purpose, bringing joy, peace, and new life.

  • Philippians 4:6-9 – Whatever is lovely, admirable, and excellent invites us to think about the beauty of God’s truth.

  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture equips us for every good work, showcasing the beauty of God’s guidance.

  • Isaiah 52:7-9 – How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news, proclaiming salvation and peace!

Consider how these verses inspire you to treasure God’s Word and share the beauty of the Gospel with others.
