How to be a Proverbs 31 woman in a Victoria's Secret World. #2

Welcome Friends!

We are into Part 2 of our journey on how to be a Proverbs 31 woman in a Victoria Secret World. You can read Part 1 HERE.

In Part 1 we experienced four of the characteristics of our Hero. The Proverbs 31 woman was
    1. Self-Disciplined. Proverbs 31:15
    2. She was a doer who spent her money wisely. Proverbs 31:16
    3. She dressed the part. Proverbs 31:17
    4. She was generous in her giving. Proverbs 31:20

In Part 2 of this series, we will dig a little deeper into what made this Wonder Woman so amazing and how we can aspire to be more like her, even when our culture is forcing us to be more like the images we see on television, in the movie's and throughout magazines.

Learning how to be a Proverbs 31 Woman, when the culture is trying to force us to live in a Victoria's Secret world.

5. The Proverbs 31 woman was Talented.

We read that she was a seamstress. Verses 21-22 says, that “She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet. She makes a tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.” There is so much we can learn from these verses.

* First, she was not afraid of any outside elements. Her family was well cared for. Her children had good shoes and a warm coat. Her shirt was always pressed and ready for work.

* Second, she dressed her family in only the best. Did you know that scarlet had a meaning in the Bible? Second only to purple, scarlet represented wealth and power and it wasn’t easy to harvest. The Hebrews extracted it from an insect that infests oak trees. The color is so steadfast that it was one of the most difficult dyes to remove from clothing. Nothing was too good for her family no matter how much time it took. Her family was going to get the best because, in her eyes, her family was royalty.

* Third, she dressed in the best clothing. She made her clothing out of fine linen and purple.  In the Bible purple means royalty, majesty, wealth, and prosperity. Fine Linen also had a very specific meaning. Linen was the color pure white and represents righteousness.

She clothed herself daily in righteousness and royalty.

What are you “dressing” your children in today? What are you “dressing” yourself in today? We are so filled with negative talk every day of our lives. From what we tell ourselves to things we hear from others. People can be mean. Just plain old mean and if we aren’t careful, we can fall to their words and take it as truth.

But if we clothe our minds in royalty and righteousness like The Proverbs 31 woman, we can fight off any harsh words that may come our way - or even worse - harsh words we tell ourselves.

Let’s not listen to the words of the culture, that say we aren’t pretty enough, good enough, or special enough. Ladies, let us clothe our bodies, as well as our minds, with righteousness and royalty. Let’s not listen to any harsh words that may come our way. Because you know what, we are royalty and that is how our Heavenly Father sees us! (1 Peter 2:9)

6. The Proverbs 31 woman Laughed.

“She is clothed in strength and dignity and laughs without fear of the future.” Proverbs 31:25

The word dignity has a pretty cool definition. It can mean a composed manner or style, nobility, majestic, royalty. The state or quality of respect.

She clothed herself with strength. We wrote mostly about this in Part 1 of the series.
But she was also clothed in dignity. She dressed as if she was royalty.

This amazing woman had no fear of the future because strength and royalty were her clothing. Day in and day out, she put on a “composed manner or style.” She knew who she was.

She didn’t fear the future because as we saw in the previous study and in the verses above, she took care of herself and her family. She made money, she made clothes, she made food - everything her family needed to survive, SHE PROVIDED!

If the government system went down, she was good. If her husband died, she was good. She was self-sufficient and therefore had no cause to fear the future.

Our culture has such a “give me, give me” attitude nowadays. What are you going to give me? People want handouts left and right. But the Proverbs 31 woman didn’t expect that. She did for herself and because of the strength of her being and the dignity she carried, she did not fear the future. She faced the future . . . laughing.

7. The Proverbs 31 woman was smart.

Verse 26 tells us that she opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. I like what The Message Bible says . . .

“When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, and she always says it kindly.”

Wisdom poured out of her. She was smart, ladies. She always had something important to say and she always said it with kindness. Let us follow her example. Let us not become like the reality show women we see on TV, always backstabbing each other - well, never mind television - look at real life! Let us work towards speaking with wisdom and kindness.

Let’s get rid of gossip! (Proverbs 20:19) Let’s get rid of anything that isn’t useful to say. Let’s build each other up with encouragement and love. (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

8. The Proverbs 31 woman was not lazy.

The Bible says she does not eat the bread of idleness. (Proverbs 31:27) Laziness is plaguing our culture. I call it “The American Idol Syndrome”. We want everything now and we don’t want to work for it.

Before I was a community-theatre owner, I taught music in the public schools for many years. American Idol ruined us. Students no longer wanted to work for anything. I can’t tell you how many times I heard, “I’m going to just go on American Idol, get on TV, and become rich.” Laziness has filtered into our society.

I’m going to share a secret with you . . .  in order to make something great of yourself, you have to work.

Period.

I am not afraid of work. I come from an entrepreneurial family. My grandfather owned his own business making artificial arms and legs which he passed onto my dad who worked the business until the Lord took him home. My mother owned a hair salon for many years, and is now running the company my father left behind. I know what work looks like.

I know that if I am going to get anywhere in life, I have to work. End of story.

It is hard. It isn’t easy. I get tired. I get so tired in mind, body, and spirit. But you now what? I keep before me our Proverbs 31 sister. I want to laugh at the future with no fear. I don’t want to worry about the winter and snow because my house is warm, and my son has clothes. I want to hold my head high with dignity at a day’s work done and completed.

Don’t buy into the American Idol Syndrome. For the very vast majority of us, we will need to work and work hard if we are ever going to become successful.

There is so much more that can be said about the Proverbs 31 woman but I think this is a great start to becoming more like her and less like the Victoria Secret culture. Some say she isn't attainable. You could never be this woman.

I just recently read a title of a blog post that said: “When you want to kick the Proverbs 31 woman in the face.” Listen, I agree she is intimidating, but with the strength of the Lord on our side, she is attainable. If we tried to do all of these steps all at once, I am sure we would fail. But take it bit by bit. One by one change something that emulates this amazing woman and get rid of something that only benefits the world and the culture.
